Sabinsa Receives Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award for GarCitrin®
PISCATAWAY, NJ (November 9, 2009) – Sabinsa received the coveted 2009 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award in the Nutraceuticals Category for the patent on its proprietary product, GarCitrin®. The patent, US 7063861, is entitled “Bioavailable Composition of Natural and Synthetic HCA.”
The Thomas Alva Edison Patent Awards were presented by the Research and Development Council of New Jersey at the Council’s annual fall dinner, held at the Liberty Science Center on November 5th. For nearly 20 years a small group of researchers, engineers, inventors and industry professionals have worked to create a higher-level of public awareness of the many outstanding New Jersey inventors that have impacted society.
“We are honored to receive the 2009 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award,” said Sabinsa founder Dr. Muhammed Majeed. “We have long held the belief that science and innovation can benefit human nutrition, and it is gratifying to have that commitment validated by this distinguished organization.”

GarCitrin® is a patented natural extract combining the weight management benefits of hydroxycitric acid (HCA) with the bioavailability-enhancing effects of garcinol, a polyisoprenylated benzophenone isolated from Garcinia cambogia and Garcinia indica. Garcinol enhances the biological action of HCA and contributes antioxidant activity to the composition. Sabinsa has done a human clinical study to show GarCitrin® is statistically significant in reducing total body weight and reducing body fat. |
This is not the first time Sabinsa has been honored with an Edison Patent Award. In 2005 Sabinsa received an award for its Cosmoperine® product – which promotes absorption of actives through the skin, and for ForsLean® in 2004 – the flagship ingredient of Sabinsa recognized world over for increasing lean body mass in the weight management category.

Sabinsa Corporation Validates Safety of Garcinia Cambogia Extract in Light of Hydroxycut Warning
PISCATAWAY, N.J., June 3, 2009 – Sabinsa Corporation has issued a position paper on the safety of HCA as found in its branded ingredient products, specifically the Citrin® range of extracts and GarCitrin®. This paper, which reviews and analyzes the published safety documentation of Garcinia cambogia extract, its active component hydroxycitric acid and its salts, is available to download fromwww.sabinsa.comandwww.garcitrin.com.
On May 1, 2009, the FDA issued a warning to consumers, based on adverse event reports, to stop using Hydroxycut products by Iovate Health Sciences Inc., of Oakville, Ontario and distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc. of Blasdell, NY. Although branded ingredients from Sabinsa Corporation do not occur in Hydroxycut, our scientific integrity dictates that we dispel any reservations on the safety of a healthful, natural, food ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, which forms a part of the active ingredients composition of Hydroxycut.
The active ingredients in an example product in the Hydroxycut line include Garcinia cambogia fruit rind extract (supplying calcium hydroxycitrate and potassium hydroxycitrate); Chromium polynicotinate; Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract; caffeine; Green tea extract (supplying polyphenols, catechins, 15% w/w epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG); White tea extract (supplying polyphenols, catechins, 15% w/w epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG); Oolong tea extract supplying polyphenols, catechins, 15%w/w epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG); Ginger extract (supplying gingerols); Raspberry ketone; and Quercetin dihydrate.
Based on the long history of food use of Garcinia cambogia fruits, the wealth of literature encompassing both preclinical and clinical studies, Sabinsa Corporation's clinical experience with Citrin® and 15 years of successful marketing of Citrin® extracts, there is no direct epidemiological or clinical evidence linking Garcinia cambogia fruit rind extract with hepatotoxicity. An exhaustive safety review by an independent panel of experts established GRAS affirmed status for Citrin®K, the potassium salt of hydroxycitric acid, in 2007. The safety of G. cambogia extract and its active ingredient (-)-HCA is supported by a variety of animal as well as in vitro experimental studies. Additional evidence from multiple human clinical trials further supports the safety aspects of (-)-HCA. Because of its potential health benefits, there has been considerable effort to elucidate the mechanism of action of (-)-HCA. Relevant biological and toxicological studies on G. cambogia extract and (-)-HCA supporting the safety in use of Citrin®K are included in the report.

Sabinsa Intellectual Property Strengthen With Granting of Two Additional International Patents
PISCATAWAY, NJ (March 2, 2009) - Sabinsa, the international ingredients company, has received notification that two additional patents have been granted.
The company’s Garcitrin® product is now protected by Japanese patent number 4205943 for “Bioavailable composition of natural and synthetic HCA.” The hydroxycitric acid (HCA) has been uniquely combined with garcinol, a polyisoprenylated benzophenone isolated from Garcinia cambogia and Garcinia indica fruits, the result is GarCitrin®. In GarCitrin®, garcinol enhances the biological action of HCA and also contributes antioxidant activity to the formulation. A 12-week, double blind clinical with over 40 patients statistically proved GarCitrin® is statistically more effective than HCA alone in:
reducing total body weight and body mass index reducing body fat -
increasing lean body mass reducing levels of appetite perception
Garcitrin® is also protected by other international patents, U.S.A. 7,063,861; AU773081; EP1254209; NZ518116. The Australian government granted Sabinsa’s cosmetic Curcumin ingredient - Tetrahydrocurcuminoids, patent number AU 2006235807, for the “Use of Tetrahydrocurcuminoids to regulate physiological and pathological events in the skin and mucosa.” This off-white Curcumin powder is ideal for cosmetic applications looking for superior antioxidant effectiveness. The composition of tetrahydrocurcuminoids helps to:
-
support healthy aging of tissues through regulating random intracellular protein crosslinking
optimizing cell electric potential
increasing intracellular transglutaminase activity
reducing "age spots" due to lipofuscin formation
